This entry is a little different. Rather than the “S” standing for “Song,” this time it stands for “Singer.” I’ve been obsessed for a while now with classic soul music. It pretty much rules my Pandora life, and my favorite of these is Sam Cooke. I mean, that voice, wow! He sings a lot of stuff that you probably didn’t realize all came from the same person (Another Saturday Night, Cupid, You Send Me, Twistin the Night Away), but I’ll let you read the Wiki (spoiler alert, he died really young). Out of his entire catalog, the song that stands out most is clearly is A Change is Gonna Come (1964). It’s synonymous with the civil rights movement and of course, was played often (though surprisingly not ad nauseam) during the Obama victory. For me it really sums up how I feel about an era. Granted, it’s an era that I wasn’t around for, but I’m sure it felt something like this:
I was born by the river in a little tent
Oh and just like the river I been a runnin’ ever since
It’s been a long, a long time coming but I know
A change gon’ come oh yes it will
It’s been too hard living but I’m afraid to die
Cuz I don’t know what’s up there beyond the sky
It’s been a long, a long time coming but I know
A change gon’ come oh yes it will
I go to the movie, and I go downtown
Somebody keep tellin me “don’t hang around”
It’s been a long, a long time coming, but i know
A change gon’ come oh yes it will
Then I go to my brother
And I say “brother, help me please”
But he winds up knocking me
Back down on my knees
There been times that I thought I wouldn’t last for long
Now think I’m able to carry on
It’s been a long, along time coming but I know
A change gon’ come, oh yes it will
